How often do you get BLASTed?

B.L.A.S.T. is an acronym that stands for:

  • Bored
  • Lonely
  • Angry
  • Sad
  • Tired

If you eat when you are stressed, chances are you have been BLASTed. But you are not alone. This is in fact the way our brains are wired. When you are under stress, the limbic center of your brain, sometimes known as your “lizard brain,” takes over, and it seeks to protect you from your emotional distress.

Our brains are always making connections and your brain has simply made the connection that when you are stressed, a quick way to feel better is to eat food. So it’s not a matter of willpower. You are being overwhelmed by your biochemistry.

But in our modern world with stress being an all too common daily occurrence what can we do about it without having to fight a losing battle using willpower?

The other part of our brain called the prefrontal cortex is where you make decisions based on morals, logic, and rationality. This is the part of your brain that is focused on achieving what you want for your life, such as weight loss. Imagine the angel and devil on your shoulders arguing – the angel is your prefrontal cortex, the devil is your brain’s limbic center.

The only problem is that when your lizard brain has taken over, you don’t want to listen to the messages being sent from your prefrontal cortex. You want the instant pleasure, and release from the emotional distress that the piece of chocolate cake is going to provide you.

So how do we change this pattern? There is something that we all have in common and that we have immediate access to 24/7. It’s our breath. That’s right. It may sound simple, but consciously taking advantage of your breath is one of the only tools you need to break this vicious cycle of stress eating.

This is how it works. The next time you feel stress in your life, any stress, take five deep breaths. Take in as much air as you can and slowly exhale. Do this five times. This doesn’t mean that you won’t still have the piece of chocolate cake. Maybe you will. But if every time you get stressed from now on you make a conscious decision to take five deep breaths, before you make any other decisions, your brain will start making a new connection. Soon, this will become an automatic behavior. And over time, you will begin to enjoy the instant pleasure you get from the deep breathing more than you will crave the pleasure of the chocolate cake. Go ahead and try it. This one technique might just change your waistline, and your life.

How passionate are you about your career? The lesson I learned from actor Jim Carrey.

Have you seen actor and comedian Jim Carrey’s recent commencement address? It was very inspiring. Jim tells a story about his father who like Jim, was gifted with the ability to make others laugh. But the difference between them was that his father didn’t have the courage to pursue his dream as a professional comedian. Instead, he chose to take what he considered a safe job as an accountant. And when Jim was just an eleven-year-old boy, his father lost his safe job, and that was a devastating blow to his father.

In his commencement address, Jim then draws the lesson from his father’s experience that “you can fail at what you don’t want to do, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

I agree Jim.

I spent the most recent eleven years of my life in the safe job of running my family’s office supplies business in the Imperial Valley. In many ways I really enjoyed it. I held the prestigious position of CEO of the business. I had a nice office, an assistant, and a team of employees whom I enjoyed working with. And I got a lot of joy out of leading a company whose mission it was to make its customers happy.

But there was a downside for me. The traditional office supplies industry was an industry on the decline as new technologies were rapidly rendering many of our core products obsolete. While it was possible to continue to make a profit in the industry, the struggle to do so as a small, independent dealer made me feel as if I were pushing a huge boulder uphill day in and day out. Furthermore, I wasn’t even personally that interested in the products that we sold.

In July 2013 I had made a decision to get healthy. Over the next twelve months I lost 113 pounds! I was very proud of that achievement. And with that weight loss came the nagging – and unanticipated — feeling that I wasn’t pursuing the right career for myself. I knew deep down that what I really wanted to do was to help other business professionals live more balanced, fulfilled lives, just as I had learned to do after many years of struggle. As a result, in July 2014 I made the difficult decision to retire from my position as CEO of my company and take a new career path as a coach for the optimal health company Take Shape for Life.

This was a difficult decision because I had based my whole professional identity over the past eleven years on being the face of my office supplies business. Furthermore, I didn’t have any sort of nest egg to fall back on. It would be sink or swim for my family and for me. But I felt in my heart that I had to follow a career path that I was passionate about. I could no longer remain in my comfort zone, my safe job. Life is much too short to settle for a career that doesn’t inspire you to wake up each morning with enthusiasm.  Or to repeat the lesson Jim Carrey learned from his father’s experience, “You can fail at what you don’t want to do so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”




The Big Secret to Avoiding Yo-Yo Dieting

In December of 2013 I was ecstatic. I had successfully lost 70 pounds over the past five months. That is an average of 14 pounds per month!
When I set out to lose weight back in July of 2013 my goal was to go down from 348 pounds all the way to 275 pounds. What a Christmas present to myself! I was now only a few pounds away from achieving my goal. I was feeling good. Clothes that hadn’t fit for over five years now didn’t fit for an entirely different reason. They were too loose! Since it was the holiday season and since I was so close to achieving my goal I felt like eating a bit more, and going out with friends drinking once again. And that’s what I did.
The holidays came and went. My weight didn’t seem to go down much during that time despite the dramatic losses I had experienced during the previous months. My ritual during my entire weight-loss journey was to weigh in once a week and I had been doing so consistently ever since I started the Take Shape for Life program back in July of 2013. And I stayed with this routine as the new year began despite feeling like I had hit a plateau.
In early February of 2014, I left for a business conference in Philadelphia. This was a five-day trip and there were many temptations. My previous weighing in routine went out the window, and the level of my indulging myself increased somewhat. But what the heck, I’m away from home, I rationalized to myself.
The following Saturday morning arrived and it was time to get back on schedule with my weekly weigh in. Standing in front of the scales, I almost wanted not to weigh in this week since I wasn’t expecting to have lost any weight. In fact, I thought I might have gained a pound or two. With great trepidation I stepped on the scales. And just as I feared, I saw that I had gained six pounds during the past two weeks!
This amount of weight gain was something I hadn’t been expecting, and it woke me up from the complacent feeling I had been experiencing the past several months when I had lost 70 pounds and had felt so good.
I began thinking about my previous history with dieting.

I had lost 70 pounds three times in the past ten years only to put it back on within a year.

I was determined not to allow this to happen again. Immediately I recommitted to my program and to my goal. In fact, I decided to set an even bigger goal for myself. Instead of getting down to 275 I decided I would set my new goal for 235. I hadn’t been down at that weight for fourteen years, back at the time when I had met my wife in Japan.

What I have just shared with you is a true account of how I almost allowed myself to yo-yo diet once again.
Statistically speaking, 85% of people who diet will regain the weight they lost within two years.
What I learned from this experience was a very key lesson on how to avoid yo-yo dieting, and how to make a fundamental transformation in my life. The lesson was this:

Pain will push until desire pulls.

Once I had nearly reached the first goal I had set for myself I had become complacent. The pain had lost its pushing power. This is one of the key factors why people yo-yo diet.
The solution? You have to create a compelling vision for what you want to create in your life. At that point a diet stops being about depriving yourself of food for a short period of time. Rather, it becomes a new way of living. A new lifestyle built on new habits. You don’t want it to stop — you want to experience it more!

So what are the action steps here?
1. Don’t allow yourself to become complacent. When you reach your goal, set a new goal for yourself.
2. Set a deadline to reach your goal. If you have to move the deadline that is okay. But at least this way you remain very focused on taking the daily actions you need to in order to meet it. And if you have to move the deadline then you should ask yourself “Why?”
3. Create a vision board of the amazing future you want to create for yourself. The more specific images you focus your mind on, both visually and mentally, the better you will be at making the short-term sacrifices necessary to achieve your goal.
